Most visitors arrive via a day tour or public bus from Huaraz. You travel southeast through the Andes, reaching extreme elevations before descending to the archaeological site at 3,180 meters (10,433 feet). Pack motion sickness medication for the sharp curves.

Road conditions are best during the dry season from May to September. Bring snacks and plenty of water, as food options are limited along the high-altitude mountain route.

This deep-green alpine lake sits at 3,972 meters (13,031 feet) above sea level. Almost all guided tours pause here so passengers can stretch and take photos. Look closely at the surrounding mountains to spot a geological fault line shaped exactly like the map of Peru.
